Battlecruisers are one of the most powerful ship classes. Although they can be researched earlier, a player cannot build them until they have completed construction of the Battlecruiser Dockyard which is part of Expansion zone 7 and they have an appropriate shipyard.
Battlecruisers, along with carriers are super capital ships which means that they can only be built using a super capital shipyard, one of which, Super Capital Shipyard I, is also part of Expansion zone 7. The other, Super Capital Shipyard II, is only available if the player's base is docked to the Super Capital Shipyard II docking point.
Another major difference between "super caps" and other ships is that super caps do not have variant models. Instead, each ship has a variety of modular systems that can be used. The in-game terms used are system or subsystem, but to avoid confusion with other uses of that word, most people call them modules or mods.

There are five battlecruiser for which permanent blueprints are available. For the Indefatigable only temporary blueprints can be obtained in Node servers under the Galactic Mutual Cooperation Agreement - as a result no modules are available for it.
Like all super capital ships, all battlecruisers are of the "type" Ultra Type.
